How to Pick Up Stitches for a Neckband in Knitting

Getting the spacing right when picking up neckband stitches makes all the difference. Here's the formula — 3 stitches per 4 rows — and how to use it.

Quick answer: Pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows along vertical edges, 1 stitch per stitch along horizontal edges, and about 2 stitches per 3 rows along diagonal edges. Always work with RS facing.

What it is

Picking up stitches for a neckband means inserting your needle into finished edges to draw up new live stitches. Spacing determines whether the band lies flat or ripples and puckers.

When to use it

  • Adding a ribbed neckband to a finished sweater
  • Adding button bands or collar edging

How to do it

  1. With RS facing, start at a shoulder seam and work around the neck opening.
  2. Along horizontal edges (cast-off rows): 1 stitch per stitch.
  3. Along vertical edges (row ends): 3 stitches per 4 rows — skip every 4th row.
  4. Along diagonal edges: approximately 2 stitches per 3 rows.
  5. After the full round, count and check against pattern. Adjust on the first ribbing row if needed.

Common mistakes

  • Picking up too many stitches — neckband flares and ripples
  • Picking up too few — neckband pulls inward and puckers
  • Working with WS facing — always work RS facing you
