Quick fix: Rip back to just above the accidental cable row, then re-knit the plain rows and the cable crossing on the correct row.
What you are seeing
Your cable pattern has columns that cross at irregular intervals โ one cable twist appears sooner or later than the others, or the repeat spacing looks off. The fabric might feel slightly bunched where the extra crossing happened.
Why it happens
- Losing count of rows between cable crossings
- Not marking which row the last cable was worked on
- Misreading the pattern repeat (e.g., cable every 6 rows vs. every 8)
Fix it now
- Confirm the error: count the rows between this crossing and the previous one and compare to the pattern. Note the correct interval.
- Rip back to just above the wrong cable row โ rip to the row immediately before the misplaced crossing.
- Place all stitches back on the needle, checking that each stitch is oriented correctly (the right leg of each loop should sit at the front of the needle).
- Work the plain rows between cables as specified in the pattern, using a row counter.
- Work the cable crossing only on the correct row number.
Prevent it next time
- Use a row counter and reset it after every cable row
- Place a locking stitch marker in the fabric at each cable crossing so you can count rows visually
- Write the cable interval on a sticky note attached to your project bag
