How to Count Rows in Knitting Without a Counter

Lost count of your knitting rows? Here's how to count rows in stockinette, garter stitch, and ribbing โ€” with and without a row counter.

Quick answer: In stockinette, count the V-shaped knit stitches in any vertical column โ€” each V = 1 row. In garter stitch, count the ridges and multiply by 2 (each ridge = 2 rows).

Counting by stitch type

Each fabric structure has a visual cue that makes row counting straightforward once you know what to look for.

In stockinette

  • Look at the smooth side (RS). Find a vertical column of stitches.
  • Each V shape = one knit row. Count the Vs from cast-on edge up.

In garter stitch

  • Look at the edge of your fabric. Count the horizontal ridges.
  • Each ridge = 2 rows. Multiply ridge count by 2 for total rows.

In ribbing

  • Count the V shapes in the knit columns (not the purl bumps).
  • Each V = 1 row.

Keeping track going forward

  • Use a physical row counter ring on your needle โ€” click after every row
  • Use a phone app like Knit Counter or Row Counter
  • Make a tally on a sticky note after each row
  • Place a removable stitch marker into the fabric every 10 rows
