How to Fix Moss Stitch That Looks Wrong

Moss stitch looking like ribbing or plain knitting? The fix is usually a missed knit-purl swap. Learn how to identify and correct a broken moss stitch pattern.

Quick fix: Check your stitch alignment: in moss stitch (also called double seed stitch in the UK), you work k1, p1 for two rows, then swap to p1, k1 for two rows. If your pattern shifted by one row, tink back and realign.

What you are seeing

The moss stitch fabric doesn't look like the even, pebbly texture it should. Instead it may look like ribbing (vertical stripes), seed stitch, or just uneven stockinette. The texture feels wrong and the columns don't line up as expected.

Why it happens

  • Moss stitch and seed stitch are easily confused โ€” they look similar but have different row structures
  • Missing a row count and working the knit-purl swap one row early or late
  • Starting the pattern on the wrong row after picking up work from a break

Fix it now

  1. Count which row you're on in the pattern โ€” moss stitch repeats over 4 rows (or 2 in some definitions). Check your row count.
  2. If you're one row off: tink back to the last correct row, then resume with the correct knit-purl sequence.
  3. If the fabric looks like ribbing: you are working knit over knit and purl over purl โ€” swap your stitches so you knit over purl and purl over knit.
  4. Use a row counter or mark every RS (right side) row to track your position reliably.

Prevent it next time

  • Place a removable marker on the right side of your work so you always know which row you're on.
  • Write down the row count every time you set the work down.
  • Learn the pattern visually: look at the stitch below the one you're about to work โ€” work the opposite (knit over purl, purl over knit).
