How to Fix Loose Edge Stitches

Loose edge stitches create a floppy, uneven selvedge. Fix them by adjusting how you start each row and where the yarn is held before the first stitch.

Quick fix: After turning your work at the end of a row, give the working yarn a firm tug before knitting the first stitch โ€” not tight, just snug. This closes the loop on the previous row's last stitch and keeps edge stitches from going loose.

What you are seeing

The edge stitches of your flat knitting are visibly larger than interior stitches โ€” they look loopy or sloppy compared to the rest of the fabric. Running your finger along the edge feels bumpy where each row turn created a loose stitch.

Why it happens

  • When you turn the work, the last stitch of the previous row stretches as you reposition your hands โ€” if not snugged, it stays large
  • Holding the yarn too far from the needle tip when starting a new row
  • Not creating consistent tension at the point of the turn

Fix it now

  1. For existing loose edges: use a tapestry needle to redistribute excess yarn from the loose stitches into neighboring stitches on the wrong side, working along the edge carefully.
  2. Block the piece โ€” wet blocking can resolve minor edge looseness by evening the stitches.
  3. Going forward: at the start of each row, give the working yarn a firm pull toward the ball before working the first stitch to tighten the previous row's final loop.
  4. Try slipping the first stitch of every row โ€” this creates a clean chain edge that hides individual stitch variation.

Prevent it next time

  • Hold the working needle very close to the tip during the first stitch โ€” this limits how far the edge stitch can stretch.
  • If working a project flat that will be seamed, a 1-stitch selvedge (slipped) eliminates loose edge concerns by hiding them inside the seam.
