Quick fix: Slip the first stitch of every row purlwise instead of knitting it. This tightens the selvedge and eliminates the hole in one move.
What you are seeing
A small gap appears at the beginning of each row, most visible in stockinette. The selvedge stitches look stretched and larger than the rest.
Why it happens
- First stitch worked too loosely after turning
- Extra yarn slack created when repositioning hands after the turn
- Yarn pulled too far before entering the first stitch
Fix it now
- Turn your work as normal.
- Give the working yarn a gentle tug to take up slack.
- Slip stitch 1 purlwise โ yarn in back for RS rows, yarn in front for WS rows.
- Work stitch 2 tightly to lock in the slipped stitch.
- Continue the row normally.
Prevent it next time
- Always slip the first stitch of every row
- Hold yarn slightly tighter when turning
- Use a shorter needle tip to reduce hand movement
