How to fix a dropped knit stitch in stockinette

Quick fix: Insert a crochet hook front-to-back through the live loop, catch the lowest ladder strand, and pull it through. Repeat upward for each row until the stitch is back on the needle.

What you are seeing

A loose loop hanging below a gap in your fabric, with horizontal "ladder" strands running above it. The surrounding stockinette looks normal, but there is a visible hole where the stitch has slipped down one or more rows.

Why it happens

  • The stitch slipped off the needle tip โ€” usually when you picked up the work or repositioned your hands.
  • You did not notice the drop during the row and knit past it.
  • You put the work down mid-row without needle caps, and a stitch worked its way off.

Fix it now

  1. Secure the live loop immediately with a locking stitch marker so it cannot drop further.
  2. Choose a crochet hook the same size as your needle or one size smaller.
  3. Insert the hook front-to-back through the live loop.
  4. Hook the lowest ladder strand from behind and pull it through the loop toward you.
  5. Check that the leading leg of the new stitch sits at the front of the hook (correct orientation).
  6. Repeat steps 3โ€“5 for each ladder strand, working upward.
  7. Place the final stitch back on the left needle with its leading leg at the front.

Prevent it next time

  • Count your stitches at the end of every row to catch drops early.
  • Use needle point protectors whenever you set the work down, even briefly.
  • Run a quick visual check along the needle after picking work up before you begin knitting.
